What is a woman?

The investigation into the question, "What is a woman?", began when I dug into my own grandmother's story. I often wonder what cultural expectations shaped and continue to shape who we are. Motherhood? femininity? Nurture? Homemaking? These are very old cultural norms. Through this series of artwork, video and performance art, I investigate my own notions of the nuance of what it is to be a woman.

Case Study

Emma the Paper doll

This is one of several explorations about what it means to be a woman. Emma is a paper doll who tries on different way outfits and lives. Paper dolls are places where girls can try out different persona. I created Emma in a performance in Chicago in 2004. I continue to have a dialogue with her about various gender issues.
