Tools for Revolution
“Let me tell you what I think of bicycling. I think it has done more to emancipate women than anything else in the world. It gives women a feeling of freedom and self-reliance. I stand and rejoice every time I see a woman ride by on a wheel…the picture of free, untrammeled womanhood.” Susan B. Anthony
When I was 5 years old, my bicycle became my ticket to freedom. I knew that if I wanted to go somewhere, I could hop on my purple Schwinn and ride there. I loved the feeling of the wind on my face and the power of my own muscles propelling me through it. Women at the turn of the century experienced a similar feeling when they discovered the bicycle. “Tools for Revolution”, is a series of intaglio prints, encaustic paintings and sculptures which continue my ongoing investigation of women’s journey. In this work I look at how bicycles promoted freedom, I honor those women who have “written the book” into new terrain for freedom, safety and equality such as Malala Yousafzai and Tillie Anderson. I also repurposed kitchen tools into tools that women must use to achieve these goals.
